It's a small, small world.
Mar. 28th, 2003 11:00 amSo,
jgd3 sends me this email earlier in the week about an artist he heard play in some club in Manchester, NH & said she's right up my alley - turns out she's playing a gig at the Finz restaurant down the street from me in Salem. After a week of working late, I manage to escape on-time and later that evening head out to see the show.
The artist, Erin Dooley, starts singing and something clicks. She looks familiar and, wait.....I remember an Erin Dooley from HS. Unfortunately, this was NOT the venue for getting a good show. It was near the bar which was overwhelmed with packs of lonely single men joking with each other and being stupid as well as loud, posh, snobish women getting tipsy. The TV was left on & was switching between college basketball and war news and only a few people were actually paying attention.
After her set, I went up to buy some CDs. I was fumbling with my money, looking like a jittery fool.
I managed to catch Erin and asked:
"Did you go to high school in Western Mass?"
"Um...yeah."
"Minnechaug?"
"Yes...Ben?!"
I was shocked that she remembered me. I only vaguely rememered her as a quiet, quirky girl and couldn't place what part of my HS life she was in. I did a little bit of this & a little bit of that but wasn't really popular - chorus, theatre, model UN/congress, mock law, hung out with bandos and had quite a few different groups of friends. As I started walking away she exclaimed to a friend who came to see the show "I went to HS with that guy!" and I had to smile - here I thought I was the nervous fan-boy. Glad I wasn't too sily.
It clicked last night where I remembered her from....though I still need to clarify this weekend. I played "Van Helsing" in a production of Dracula and I remember Erin was one of the cast/crew.
She introduced me to her guitarist/husband who turned out to be the lead singer for the band she opened for - BrotherSun. I bought 2 CDs - two of hers and one of his.
It's a small, small world. But this made my day after a very long week.
