BrainStream: Back on the Wagon, Again
Aug. 2nd, 2004 09:34 amWell, this morning I've started back on track to "improve my way of eating". I say "Way of Eating" because it's not any particular diet per se. It's modified South Beach Diet (SBD) if you want to label it but basically it's just good food sense - low fat, low carb, no hydrogenated oils, lots of water & omega 3s.
I gave up on SBD the day Will was born because a combination of things - 1) I was in the mood to celebrate and reward myself, 2) I didn't want to have to think about eating or cooking, 3) It was just easier. Well, it was easier until the cravings came back. About a month ago I started to have an ice cream sunday every Friday & the week Kirky was gone in California I was a horrible, horrible sugar/snack binging fiend.
I haven't weighed myself recently but I probably gained about 15lbs back which would put me at about 280lbs total. I think my lowest was 264lbs. Anyway, its not just about the weight. As much as I love all the junk it seriously effects my blood sugar and puts me into these draining "food comas" after meals. I daresay it even contributes to my lethargy & poor moods.
Luckily, I'm starting back up pretty quickly so the weight gained doesn't have time to, er, get stored & solidify. However exercise will be interesting - since I haven't done my walks since May, I'm not sure how much I'll be able to cope with the heat.

Date: 2004-08-04 04:11 pm (UTC)Anyhow, on the suggestion front (don't know if this is possible, fits with your schedule, or if your son is old enough), but my sis takes her baby for a walk in the morning around 6 or 7am-ish, to avoid the full-on heat & humidity. The trick is (& this is why I'm not sure if William is old enough yet for this) there are baby-jogger type strollers - which are also lots of fun for the baby since they are much more open air and give them more of a view - and instead of jogging, you can walk or speed walk, but it's really light & designed to be adjustable for different heights so they don't strain your back or affect your gait. Add in a nice walk with your son where you can talk to him & point things out & it's a win-win!!!
Don't know if this is helpful for right now, but he should be old enough by mid-fall & that is sooo lovely, so keep it in mind!!!
Oh yeah, just have to add my perky cheerleader moment:don't think about it as a diet, 'it's a way of life' ::G::

Date: 2004-08-04 04:31 pm (UTC)As far as Will & Walking? We just got in from an hour walk around town and discovered some new little pockets of historical houses. Will is asleep when I get up and we try to keep it that way. I usually do a 30min speed walk around the MIT campus which breaks out a killer sweat.
OT: I've been reading your blog comments and some of your coworkers scare me.

Date: 2004-08-04 05:15 pm (UTC)But, back in the real world ... Glad to hear you're walking again!!! Salem must be a ton more amazing then NYC, though I do find some amazing nooks & crannies every now & then -- sadly I seem to find them right before the trendies bear down & wreck trendy havoc, so it never really lasts, but there's always something new. Or I can hit LA & walk around to everyone's horror ... wandered Bev Hills & tried to cross one of the big blvd's dissecting it (think it was Santa Monica Blvd) last time I was out there & people pulled over to see if I was 'jacked' ::SIGH::
Weirdly enough when I was doing research on weight maintenance verse weight loss I came on a few interesting studies that said walking/jogging/ whatever at a slower pace (think it was 1.5% above resting pulse rate) is better then speeding it up -- something to do with the sort of energy stores used to burn what (seems when you hit cardio you just deplete sugar, but slower attacks & gets at fat). Though - of course - they also say you should do speed for cardio. At this point, though, between all the conflicting ideas, I guess the thing to do is whatever makes you feel good, keeps you healthy & doesn't burn you out from doing more (how's that for words of wisdom???)
As for my coworkers ... they scare me silly. They're amazing, extremely smart, uber kind & take really good care of me if I'm traveling with them for business, but if I walked in & saw them eating glass I don't think I would be all that shocked.
The good news is, I think I scare them worse ::G::
