Harry Potter: Eye color and Spell color

" A jet of green light issued from Voldemorts wand just as a jet of red light blasted from Harry's - they met in midair - and suddenly Harry's wand was vibrating as though an electric charge were surging through it..." (GoF Ch36)

Harry's eyes are described as green numerous times, like his mother's, while Voldemort's are almost always described as red or scarlet. Does this give him some sort of additional protection or strength against Avada Kedavra? Other (red) spells for Voldemort?

In SS/PS, Hagrid says to send up Green Sparks if they find the Unicorn and Red Sparks if they get into trouble.

I always assumed the green lights that seem to go with everything with Voldemort (the Dark Mark, etc) was just another nod to his Slytherin heritage, while Harry's red light was because he was a true Gryffindor.

JKR has alluded to Harry's eye color being important before and I'd never caught that before!
